Carle to consolidate leased office space; spurs development at Curtis interchange

In preparation for patient, organizational, and community needs, Carle will bring employees from 10 leased offices throughout Champaign-Urbana into one new owned facility allowing for improved efficiency and productivity, saving millions annually, and providing resources for future clinical program growth.

“We’re excited about what we can accomplish when we bring our various teams together in one location,” said James C. Leonard, MD, president and chief executive officer, The Carle Foundation. “This is a move that will help preserve resources in the long run and allow us to continue improving for patients and members.”

Carle at The Fields will be built at the northwest corner of the Interstate 57 and Curtis Road interchange in Champaign. Departments located at Carle Foundation Hospital’s campus such as Accounting and IT, along with HR, Financial Services, and Health Alliance offices at 301 S. Vine in Urbana, as well as departments at other leased locations throughout the community will move to this new facility.

The project is one of several construction or renovations for Carle in the past year including opening a new Heart and Vascular Institute location in Mattoon, primary care center in Watseka, a clinic expansion at Carle – Champaign on Curtis as well as the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine facility being built in Champaign.

“By relocating administrative support services, we’ll be better able to align the space on our campus in Urbana to serve patients. The move will be helpful to those who have expressed interest in alleviating parking and other pressures. In addition, there will be opportunities for the community to reimagine the various locations,” said Scott Harding, vice president of Facilities and Services for Carle.

The Carle Foundation Board of Trustees reviewed the project in September and later approved in December. The transition away from leased space will have no direct impact on property tax revenue as the building owners have always paid taxes on those locations. The lease expiration dates have been in place for years allowing the owners to plan for future uses.

Departments in the following facilities will relocate to the new space:

  • 502 N Busey Ave, Urbana
  • 221 Broadway Ave, Urbana
  • 102 E Main St, Urbana
  • 1101 E University Ave, Urbana
  • 901 W University Ave, Ste 301, Urbana
  • 301 S Vine St, Urbana
  • 206 W Anthony Dr, Champaign
  • 2102 N Neil St, Champaign
  • 2902 Farber Dr, Champaign
  • 201 Devonshire Dr, Champaign

“It’s an important time for the community with exciting development and re-development including Willard Airport, Research Park, as well as construction at South Neil Street, Champaign and Urbana downtowns, and Campus Town,” Dr. Leonard said. “We’re focused on how we can best serve the community in the decades to come, and we believe this is an investment that will benefit residents now and over the course of the next 20 to 50 years.”

After local permitting is complete, construction is scheduled to begin in 2016 with completion in 2017.
