Snug, safe sleeping helps parents and babies

New parents worry about keeping their babies safe from so many things, especially Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

“Safe sleep is always an important part of the conversation,” said Lisa Siegwald, RN, an inpatient nurse manager who cares for new mothers and new babies at Carle.

“Parents and others in the family always want what’s best for baby, so we take our time answering their questions and make sure they have all the information and helpful advice they need.”

While the safety of swaddling has been in the news lately, it’s important for new parents to get the most current advice about safe sleeping from their pediatrician.

Here are 5 Safe-Sleeping Tips for Infants from the American Academy of Pediatrics:

  1. Always place your baby on his or her back to sleep.
  2. Make sure the baby’s mattress is firm and the sheets fit tightly.
  3. Keep loose items—like stuffed animals and bumper pads—out of the crib.
  4. Place the baby’s bed in your room within arm’s reach.
  5. Keep your sleeping baby warm but not hot.

Siegwald encourages parents—as well as other who care for infants—to keep this additional safe-baby advice top of mind:

  • Breastfeed whenever possible for as long as possible.
  • Schedule and keep up with well-baby visits.
  • Get the immunizations your pediatrician advises.
  • Keep your home and care smoke-free for baby’s sake.

In addition to following your pediatrician’s advice, be sure to consult with reliable resources:
